Anime Los Angeles (ALA) is a premier Southern California (SoCal) anime convention and a beloved staple for the community. As the first major anime con of the year, it kicks off every January with high energy and incredible creativity.
The History and Growth of ALA
Anime Los Angeles has deep roots, blossoming steadily since its debut in 2005. While it originally began as a hotel-based event, it transitioned to a 4-day format in 2019 to accommodate its massive growth. Furthermore, its rise to international fame accelerated in 2016, attracting cosplayers from around the globe—including a significant contingent from Europe. This global recognition highlights ALA’s commitment to providing a welcoming, inclusive space for fans of all backgrounds.
A Unique Focus on Fashion
Anime LA is more than just a standard Japanese culture event. Specifically, it masterfully blends anime, street fashion, and community into a unique experience. What truly sets ALA apart is its dedication to diverse and creative style, particularly through its elaborate Lolita fashion shows. These shows have become a cornerstone of the convention, captivating audiences with stunning displays of craftsmanship and intricate detail.
Venue Evolution
In the beginning, ALA started in various Los Angeles County hotels (including Van Nuys, Burbank, and Los Angeles). However, after selling out the LA Airport Marriott in 2015, the event moved to the Ontario Convention Center in 2016. Eventually, after reaching maximum capacity in Ontario and navigating the COVID-19 pandemic, the convention found its new home at the Long Beach Convention Center in 2022.
